The four-part IHA Market Watch 2021 video series explores the evolution of key lifestyle trends driving the home and housewares business this year… and beyond.
Today’s episode looks at Space:
Before Covid, a strong “re-urbanization” trend found millennials and empty-nesters flocking to cities and embracing smaller living spaces in exchange for proximity to jobs, entertainment and nightlife.
Because of the pandemic, this trend has actually reversed, with consumers moving back to the suburbs and “ex-urbs” and toward larger living spaces.
This has been accompanied by the explosion in remote working and learning, which creates its own space challenges. Rooms in homes are now used for more than their primary purposes: They are classrooms, offices, exercise studios, entertainment centers and more.
Meanwhile, an increase in outdoor living is inviting safer interactions while also expanding available space. Products that help save space and help transform space are in high demand.
