Today’s consumers may be on-the-go, but that doesn’t mean they’re dining out more. In fact, as more people look for ways to scale back on spending — and eat healthier, many are recognizing the benefits of bringing homemade food when on-the-go. Whether that means transporting meals to work, school or social gatherings, it’s an important trend home and housewares retailers can help support.
Cutting Costs and Prioritizing Wellness
Two-thirds of consumers are cutting back on personal expenses, according to a June survey from Popmenu. Their number one target? Restaurants (61%). That’s followed by new clothes/shoes (52%), entertainment (49%) and travel (47%). (Home goods either wasn’t an option or didn’t make the top ten.
The 2025 International Housewares Association (IHA) State of the Industry Report found that 58% of consumers plan to cook more at home this year. (Only 1% plan to cook less.) While cost-savings was the most cited reason (61%), a desire to eat more healthfully was a close second at 59%.
Where To?
“For here or to go?” may be a popular question when visiting a fast-food restaurant. But many consumers are now saying “for here and to go” when preparing food at home.
That may explain why food storage products are the top storage and organization category consumers expect to purchase in 2025. (According to the IHA State of the Industry Report’s MarketOutlook)
IHA’s State of the Industry Report also found that work is the most popular outside location (49%) where people are eating food prepared at home. Other top locations include on their commute (39%), at a gathering at another location (38%) and at outdoor leisure/sports/events (37%).
Portable Solutions
With so many different destinations, modes of transport and food-related needs, there’s definitely opportunity for retailers to support consumers with a variety of portable solutions. That can include anything from prioritizing this type of inventory right now to using them in special promotions and in-store displays.
When it comes to products themselves, you may want to include newer players like this heated lunch box – HeatsBox Go by Cribsi – or this stylish Bento Lunch Bowl from Mepal that’s microwavable and leakproof.
